Overview
Courses are organized under three main
headings:
Elementary and Intermediate Language
Courses, designed to prepare students for advanced courses in
Greek and Latin literature; they also carry credit towards the University
Foreign Language Requirement. Each of these courses is offered once a year.
Courses in Ancient Culture and
Civilization, in which the reading is entirely in English translation.
These courses are open as electives to all students; they can be applied
to the Minor in Ancient Civilization--in fact they form its basis. Some
of them, marked as such, carry credit towards the University Core Literature
Requirement. A selection of these courses is offered each year, usually
four to six.
Reading Courses in Greek and Latin Literature. These are designed
for Classics majors and graduate students, but are open to anyone who possesses
the necessary language background. Again, a selection is offered each year,
usually six to eight.
Courses in Modern Greek are listed separately,
following Classics courses. Students should note that courses in other departments,
which may not be listed here, will sometimes carry credit towards the Minor
in Ancient Civilization.
NOTE: to find descriptions of courses
for this semester, and to register for courses, you will need to go to Descriptions & Registration, at
a site maintained by the Office of Student Services. Only a selection of the courses
named below are offered in any given semester.
