OCTOBER 20: the department regrets to report the death this past summer of our beloved colleague, Gene Bushala, musis amicus, fructus paratis, who taught at Boston College from 1963 to 1996, and whom we remember for his personal warmth and his subtle, ironic intelligence. Gene appears on the right in the photograph below, taken in his backyard a few weeks before he died; pictured left is his long time friend and colleague, Fr. David Gill SJ. Gene is survived by his wife, Cindy. Messages of condolence may be sent to her, care of the department.

FEBRUARY 16: the department is proud to announce the inauguration of the Behrakis Family Symposium in Classical Studies. The inaugural event will be a lecture by John McKesson Camp II, Director of Excavations at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. His topic will be "The Athenian Agora and the Origins of Democracy." Professor Camp is an authority on the agora, the heart of ancient Athens. He has excavated there since 1966, and served as Director of Excavations since 1994. His recent publications include The Athenian Agora, The Archaeology of Athens, and The World of the Ancient Greeks.

APRIL 17: congratulations to Classics majors Katherine KILRAIN, who has been named a Sophomore Class Dean's Scholar in the College of Arts & Sciences,. and Sam DOLINGER, who has been named a Junior Class Dean's Scholar.
APRIL 17: congratulations to Meghan BARRY, a second year graduate student in Classics who has been selected to take part in a summer seminar at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. The topic of the seminar is "The Iliad in the Second Millenium B.C."
APRIL 26: congratulations to three graduate students who have passed their comprehensive exams and will be awarded their Master of Arts degrees at graduation in May: Meghan BARRY (Classics), Matt CROZIER (Latin), and Dan HAHESY (Latin).

MAY 18: congratulations to Classics majors and Ancient Civilization minors who are being honored at graduation this year:
Nicole POTDEVIN (Classics) will receive the Max Wainer Award for excellence by a graduating Classics major. Nicole will study archaeology next year at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.
Erin GALGAY (Classics & Theology) will receive the Cardinal O'Connell Theology Medal and will be recognized as a Scholar of the College for her exceptional senior thesis.
Nat CAMPBELL (Classics & German) will receive the John F. Norton Award as the graduating senior best personifying the tradition of humanistic scholarship and will be recognized as a Scholar of the College for his exceptional senior thesis.
Paul CAMACHO (Philosophy & Theology, Ancient Civilization minor) will receive the John Bapst, S.J. Philosophy Medal and will be recognized as a Scholar of the College for his exceptional senior thesis.
Halima KHAN (History, Ancient Civilization minor) will receive the Thomas H. O'Connor Award for excellence in American history and will be recognized as a Scholar of the College for her exceptional senior thesis.
