The Board's economic research divisions regularly hire individuals as research assistants with undergraduate degrees, primarily in economics, but also in related fields such as statistics, mathematics, finance or computer science. Research assistants work closely with one of the finest economic research staffs in the country, applying quantitative skills to both real world policy issues and high-level research projects. Accordingly, they prefer that applicants have training in econometrics, mathematical statistics, or both, as well as good computer skills--for example, facility with a statistical package such as SAS or a programming language such as C. In addition, most positions require training in economics through the intermediate theory level. Extensive coursework in mathematics also would be useful, as would study in such areas as money and banking, finance, and international trade theory. Typically, research assistants work at the Board for about two years, before going on to graduate programs or careers in economics, business, or related disciplines.
For almost all research assistant positions, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who intend to become citizens. In addition, U.S. citizens will receive preference in employment over equally qualified persons who are not U.S. citizens.
Candidates must formally apply by submitting applications as instructed on the Board's public website: www.federalreserve.gov (follow the links "Career Opportunitiies," "Research Assistant," "Economic Research Divisions," and "To apply").
Applications are accepted at any time. However, because the main interviewing and hiring period occurs in March/April, it is recommended that interested candidates submit completed applications by January 31 or as soon as possible thereafter.
