FTC May 8, 2012

Meeting opened by Michael Connolly with an iPad promotional film (gag) – iOS features can do everything:

iPad Activations (Barry Schaudt)

"At the last FTC meeting, there was a question about how many students have iPads.  We don't have this number.  However, we know how many iPads were activated.  There are 1424 iPads  that have been activated by students, out of 2433 total." (Schaudt)

BCCR Computer Specifications (Schaudt)

See attached at the end of these minutes.   Note:  These specifications will change when new computers are released this summer.

BCCR 3 – will start in August,  4 year cycle (no one is on a staggered 6 year wait any longer)

High-end desktop on the Mac is now an iMac.

Evan Kantrowicz comment from the specifications committee – new monitors coming this time

On monitor sizing:  Alec Peck – iMac 27 monitor issue – 30 inch monitor too big.  27 inch probably too much, more than needed.   Faculty should be thoughtful in making this choice.

Tablet Project update (Rita Owens) – 28 faculty (25 ipads and 3 ACES 3E – Windows).  Rec. to ATAB to extend this pilot to January.  iPad limitations are becoming clearer, if the object was to determine their usefulness as a replacement for laptops.  2400 iPads appear to be on campus (one half students) – no clear idea yet about maintenance/service problems (see Barry Schaudt data above).

eTeaching Day – Wednesday next – Eric Mazur, physicist, plenary speaker.  Same format as other years.  Spread the word one more time since people can still register.

"Rogue applications" aka "Micro-sourcing" (Kit Baum) aka BYOS (Bring Your Own Software) aka DYI.  Faculty are using non-BC cloud applications – e.g. Lore.    Don't ask, don't tell?   Faculty should follow data security policies (FERPA, etc.) for protecting student information and intellectual property.  "Yore" may involve taking student information which puts one "a little bit out there".  Michael – suggests developing a "Primer" for users.  Faculty need to exercise care and due diligence.

"Rogue Applications" II - Barry Schaudt.  "Drop Box" questions;  Google docs?

Rita – Explanation of "Drop Box" policies – hosted data.

Apple in process of restricting users with various restrictions.  Barry suggest D-Box widely used;  Law School sends out a warning;  guidelines need to be developed for DropBox use – FERPA restrictions especially.  iCloud is also being used for data.

"Rogue Applications" III - Michael Connolly  - TCs support a data server (EOS) that can be set up for a department.  Will not stream but can include all other media.  Webdav desktop setup.  The TC sets permissions, etc.   More accessible BC-based alternative to MyFiles (actually, MyFiles as WebDav).   Consult your TC.

"Rogue Applications" IV - Rita Owens concludes from faculty comment this evening that she needs to take back (to Michael Bourque) the message that MyFiles does not cut it and people are finding myriad workarounds (going "Rogue").  Also, BC Share is also only minimally useful.    Both suggest these systems should be able to these things easily and seamlessly or faculty will look elsewhere.

Other options:

á       iAnnotate – i95 app – highly recommended.

á       Model Driven Development – If curious, try Mendix.  Model can have software written directly.  MDD tries to answer the major problem of the day – inherent conservatism of all software developers/users to preserve investment in existing systems.

Raffle Winners:  by department:  iPad 1. Communications (Bill) 2.  Law (Michael)  3.  Management (Bill).  There is yet another raffle at eTeaching Day.
