Philosophy Department Office The department office is staffed by Peggy Bakalo, department administrator, and RoseMarie DeLeo, graduate program assistant with special responsibility for graduate programs. Both are ready to help students with information, experience, and sound advice. The department office is generally open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Ancient Philosophy Colloquium The Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy (BACAP) is a consortium of colleges and universities in Boston, Hanover, NH, Providence, and Worcester, sponsoring seminars and lectures in the field of ancient philosophy. Computer Facilities Teaching Fellows have desktop computers in their offices. Other graduate students have access to public computers in the department and additional computers in the O'Neill Computing Center (where both Macintosh and IBM computers are available). Laser printing is available at either site. The department reception room is regularly closed shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Dissertation Fellowships In recent years the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences has made available year-long Dissertation Fellowships (currently $16,000) as well as Summer Dissertation Fellowships (currently $4,000). These grants are intended to help students bring their dissertations to successful conclusion. They are awarded by the Graduate School upon department recommendation.
Funding Assistance The Office of Sponsored Programs assists both faculty and graduate students in finding sources of external funding for their projects, and provides advice in the development of proposals. The Office of Sponsored Programs maintains a reference library of publications from both the public sector and the private sector listing funding sources for sponsored projects. The library is open 9:00-4:30 Monday through Friday. The Office of Sponsored Programs is located on the fifth floor of 21 Campanella Way. Graduate Student Committee The graduate students in philosophy have organized a committee to provide a formal channel of communication between faculty and graduate students. The committee includes three M.A. students, three Ph.D. students, and the department representative to the Graduate Student Association.
Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, Vienna, Austria Doctoral students who have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation are eligible to apply to be Junior Fellows. Fellows reside at the institute for six months and participate in lectures and seminars with junior and senior fellows at the institute. Typically two graduate students each year are chosen to participate.
Language Study In recent years the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences has granted partial tuition remission to graduate students (Ph.D. and M.A.) taking intensive summer language programs in Latin, French, and German in the Boston College Summer Session. Funded students may also take language courses during the academic year at no cost; unfunded students may do so for the cost of one of the three credit hours per semester. Library Consortium The Boston Library Consortium includes the following libraries: Boston College, Boston Public, Boston University, Brandeis, MIT, Northeastern, State Library of Massachusetts, Tufts, University of Massachusetts (Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell), and Wellesley College. For User Guide and further information please consult the main reference desk in O'Neill Library.
Library Requests The department has a budget allotment for the acquisition of books and periodicals. Requests and suggestions are welcome from both faculty and students.
Lonergan Center Studies related to the work of Jesuit theologian and philosopher Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984) have a focus in the Lonergan Center, located on the fourth floor of Bapst Library. The Center houses a growing collection of Lonergan's published and unpublished writings as well as secondary materials and reference works.
Lonergan Fellowships In recent years some financial aid and tuition remission has been available to assist graduate students specializing in the thought of Bernard Lonergan. For further information please consult Prof. Joseph Flanagan, S.J.
Medieval Colloquium The Boston Colloquium in Medieval Philosophy and Theology sponsors seminars and lectures in medieval philosophy, theology, and related fields. For further information please consult Prof. Stephen Brown (Theology).
Medieval Theology and Philosophy The Institute of Medieval Philosophy and Theology is a center that unites the teaching and research efforts of faculty members in the Philosophy and Theology Departments who specialize in medieval philosophy and theology. The focus of the institute is the relationship between medieval philosophy and theology and contemporary philosophy and theology. Students are admitted either to the philosophy department or to the theology department, and doctoral degrees are awarded through these departments. Paris Program Boston College's Office of International Programs has lately set up a cooperative program with the Paris Center for Critical Studies. The program involves enrollment at the Université de Paris III - Nouvelle Sorbonne, and provides access to courses at the College Internationale de Philosophie. The program is open to graduate students as well as to undergraduate students. Philosophy Forum A number of M.A. and Ph.D. students have joined to form the Philosophy Forum. This group sponsors sessions for the reading of papers, social events, and other activities of interest to graduate students. Members of this group have assembled a helpful Orientation Packet with information about the practical side of graduate student life.
Placement The department provides assistance to M.A. students seeking admission to Ph.D. programs as well as to Ph.D. students seeking academic employment. Typically the department offers one or more general sessions to discuss application strategies, as well as more personalized assistance with the composition of curricula vitae and other dossier materials, practice job interviews, and the like. Placement Center The Boston College Career Planning and Placement Center is located at 38 Commonwealth Avenue. Students are well advised to set up files at the Center. It is in the student's interest to verify that important materials such as letters of recommendation have reached the Center, and to verify that important recipients such as potential employers have received files from the Center. The Center also offers information on voluntary services (Peace Corps, Vista, etc.) and acts as the Boston College Selective Service Information Center.

Teaching Excellence Awards In recent years the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences has sponsored a program of awards to recognize and reward excellent teaching on the part of graduate students. Currently the department is asked to make recommendations for four such awards in the amount of $600 each.
Travel to Scholarly Conferences There are funds available to assist graduate students who are delivering papers at scholarly conferences. For further information please consult the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate Student Association (GSA).
Xerox Facilities The department xerox machine is basically intended for the use of faculty and administrative personnel. Graduate students have access to the xerox machine for work-related purposes. Large scale copy work should be done at the B.C. Press. The department copying room is regularly closed shortly before 4:30 p.m. |
