The Consulate General of Israel to New England offers semester-long internship opportunities for undergraduate students in the Boston area. As an intern, you will experience work in a fast-paced diplomatic environment while utilizing skills developed in your academic career. They offer internships for the Consulate as a whole, with the chance to "focus" on a department of your choice that suits your interest and career goals. The following departments having focused internship opportunities: Academic Affairs, Political Affairs, Press & Media Relations, Public Diplomacy (Community Relations) and Economic Affairs.
In each of the departments, interns will respond to telephone and email information requests about Israel, perform computer research, send out materials, and participate in the daily functions of their respective department. Assignments vary depending on the sort of programs taking place each semester, as well as the interns' strengths. They are accepting interns for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. All internships are unpaid and designed for Undergraduate students.

The Office of Tax Policy Analysis (OTPA) at the Massachusetts Department of Revenue is now accepting internship applications for 2008. The OTPA provides tax revenue forecasts, statistics on the Massachusetts tax system and estimates the fiscal impact of tax law changes. Interns work closely with the economists and/or statisticians, providing support for various projects relating to the tax system in the Commonwealth of MA. OTPA is seeking interns interested in tax policy issues. Successful applicants typically have taken course work in Economics or a related field, or have a demonstrated interest in the research. Applicants in Masters' programs preferred, advanced Bachelors candidates considered.
Applicants should have a working knowledge of software applications such as Excel, and Word and also possess effective communication skills. The 2008 Canon Insights Program is a comprehensive program that runs for 10 weeks during the summer (June 2-August 8). This is a full-time (9 AM to 5 PM), paid internship. This program is designed to provide capable and motivated students an opportunity to gain hands-on work experience by participating in significant work projects. The internship program is a great learning experience and an opportunity to make some lasting friendships.
Canon prefers students that are just completing their junior year or graduating in December 2008; however, all are welcome to apply. To succeed in the Insights Program, you must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong computer skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The Economic Analysis Group in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice has openings for four paid summer interns. The Economic Analysis Group consists of approximately 50 Ph.D. economists who provide economic analysis for antitrust cases brought by the Division. The primary focus of their work is applied microeconomics, with an emphasis on competitive interactions between firms in specific markets. Interns will work closely with staff economists to define relevant product and geographic markets, determine pricing patterns, perform statistical analysis of industry behavior within markets, and provide exhibits (such as data, charts, and graphs) that may be required for litigation. Interns may also assist staff economists working on articles for publication in economic journals.
The Economic Analysis Group is looking for highly motivated individuals with an interest in microeconomics and who will have completed a course in econometrics or a similar discipline. In addition to coursework in economics, experience in working with spreadsheets, computer databases, and other type of computer programming is useful but not essential.

J-PAL is a network of development economists who perform randomized evaluations, and has an excellent reputation for rigorous empirical development research. Each year these economists identify research assistants (RAs) through a centralized recruiting process. Some positions are in the U.S., but most are in developing countries. They are currently looking to fill more than 20 research positions in over 15 different countries, including Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Kenya, Indonesia, India, Madagascar, Morocco, Sierra Leone, and Yemen. The global macro research group of State Street Global Markets in Boston is seeking a full-time intern. The individual should have an interest in international finance/economics, with some knowledge of econometrics. Excel Visual Basic programming skills are important, and a working knowledge of Matlab and Eviews would be helpful. Much of the work will focus on flow-based, market microstructure FX modeling, as opposed to traditional FX valuation techniques. Their research is grounded in academia, driven by a proprietary data set on portfolio flows and ends with a set of inputs and recommendations for currency managers. Any experience using Bloomberg and Datastream is a definite bonus. Candidates should be able to work effectively with little supervision, completing tasks in a timely manner. The Economic Policy Institute has an immediate opening for two Research Assistants. These are permanent positions. Responsibilities of the job include collection and analysis of data from print and electronic sources, preparation of tables and figures, research and summarization of literature, the ability to process economic data, and assisting in the facilitation of a network of state and regional think tanks. The key responsibilities include assistance with the creation of spreadsheets for EPI reports, such as its flagship publication, the State of Working America, and other EPI reports (see www.epi.org for further examples). To this end, the RA is required to be a methodical and detailed oriented researcher and have the ability to transform economic data (e.g. convert nominal wages into inflation adjusted wages). Skills include the ability to find data--for the most part from web searches--and transfer data into spreadsheets to make scores of tables and figures. Accuracy and attention to detail are a must. The candidate must have the ability to organize large amounts of data in excel and meticulously source and document those data and meet deadlines.
One position will emphasize research in labor markets and living standards. The second position will include research on international economics, and support of the Economic Analysis and Research Network ("EARN", see www.earncentral.org). Through EARN, the RA will assist with organizing and leading this network of 47 state-level think tanks in 36 states as it works on economic development, minimum wage, health care, and other issues. The Federal Reserve Board, in Washington, D.C., seeks a research assistant with a programming/computation background and/or interests to fill a mid-year vacancy in the Macroeconomic and Quantitative Studies section, Division of Research and Statistics.
The ideal candidate would be a very recent, or very soon to be graduate with an undergraduate degree in economics with a computer science or math minor. However, any candidate with a strong background in computer languages and software of various sorts (Matlab, C, C++, fortran, perl, python, for example) would be considered. Someone who is interested in computational methods would be especially welcome, and in research more generally. The successful candidate will carry out work supporting the research of one or more of the section's research economists. The position is best suited for someone who would relish a two-to-three year stint here before moving on to graduate studies in economics or finance or a related field; research assistant positions should not be thought of as permanent positions.

Mason Cole, BC '05, is now teaching high school under the auspices of a program called the Mississippi Teacher Corps, which is based out of the University of Mississippi. This program needs good science and math teachers. The purpose of the Corps is to recruit non-Education majors to come and teach in disadvantaged Mississippi Delta high schools for two years. In exchange, participants receive a full graduate scholarship to Ole Miss, and can graduate in two years with an M.A. in Education and a teaching certificate that allows them to teach in over 40 of the 50 states. They are also paid full salaries as licensed first-year teachers through their respective schools. This year, that amount was $30,000, which goes much further in Mississippi than in Massachusetts! The CBO is a small, nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. The Macroeconomic Analysis Division is seeking candidates for an entry-level assistant analyst position for a period not to exceed three years - ideal for those interested in substantive work experience before attending graduate school.
The Macroeconomic Analysis Divison, with about 26 economists, is responsible for the macroeconomic forecasts that are used in the budget and for reporting to the Congress on the likely macroeconomic impact of its proposals. Assistant analysts provide support to other members of the division on a wide variety of topics. They help maintain models used in the development of the economic forecast and projections, and assist in the data manipulation and analysis for projects such as: the effect of taxation on labor supply, the macroeconomic effects of social security reform proposals, the determinants of long-term growth, the economic effects of fiscal policy, and financial analysis of federal credit and insurance programs.

Quantitative finance has grown enormously in recent years and students of quantitative disciplines, including mathematics, physics, economics, and computer science, are consistently finding successful careers in the field. The position is a professional Economist or Statistician (Economics) located in the Economic Analysis and Information Branch in the Regional Office of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Branch serves as the primary BLS contact with the public in the region, and is responsible for disseminating, explaining, and analyzing BLS data. The professional economist receives developmental assignments in the field of economic or statistical analysis and dissemination to prepare him/her for higher level work. The incumbent performs routine analyses and dissemination of BLS major program data to outside users and for developmental purposes, assignments may include some segments of aspects of work that are typically at a higher level.
Incumbent serves as the initial professional contact for the office's callers and visitors and supplies BLS statistics and publications to data users. Internships are in the fall, spring, and summer with the summer application deadline coming up April 1st. The Foundation for Sustainable Development is dedicated to supporting the efforts of over 160 grassroots development organizations in eight countries that are working to better their communities. Through strong partnership, FSD provides these organizations with grants, technical assistance, and capable interns/volunteers that implement much needed project work. Interns work with host organizations as a volunteer or an intern for 1 week - 2 years, depending on the program selected. Seven different international programs are built to meet a range of objectives and time constraints. The overall result is this: FSD applies its resources in the most high-impact subject areas with a proven model for successful implementation and integration within local communities. In the end, participants receive a superior training because they learn a system of cultural collaboration along with the practical skills of project implementation.

Up until 2000, Brian worked in General Criminal and White Collar Crime in the Charlotte division of the FBI. Since 2000, Brian has worked in the Boston division. He currently specializes in work with Italian Organized Crime, particularly the La Cosa Nostra/Genovese Crime Family.

The Economic Analysis Group in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice has openings for four paid summer interns. The Economic Analysis Group consists of approximately 50 Ph.D. Economists who provide economic analysis for antitrust cases brought by the Division. The primary focus of their work is applied microeconomics, with an emphasis on competitive interactions between firms in specific markets. Interns will work closely with staff economists to define relevant product and geographic markets, determine pricing patterns, perform statistical analysis of firm behavior within markets, and provide exhibits (such as data, charts, and graphs) that may be required for litigation. As a Junior Research Analyst (JRA), you will work with consultants and research colleagues to: articulate, scope, and prioritize research needs, and identify and gather relevant information using a broad spectrum of sources, within tight deadlines. You will engage in team problem solving and contribute to knowledge creation initiatives. You will also continue to expand your knowledge and contribute to building the Center.
