Jameel Poverty Action Lab

J-PAL is now hiring for a newly created Research Assistant position. Since its creation in 2003, J-PAL has been highly successful in promoting the need for better evidence based policy and expanding the knowledge and use of randomized trials of social programs. In just the past three years, their network of professors has expanded from 11 to 34, their projects from 20 to 108, and the countries they work in from 10 to 30. As the number of projects grows dramatically so has the need to draw out policy lessons. They are looking to synthesize and clearly present what the J-PAL evidence says on key policy questions, such as "what is the most effective way to get children in school?" This requires analyzing the results of all the completed projects and presenting the costs and impact of different programs in the same field on a comparable numerical metric basis, to help policymakers decide what they want to invest in. This work involves not only drawing out and discussing the policy conclusions of the different studies, but also writing up and publishing these policy conclusions in a variety of ways--from a searchable policymaker interface on J-PAL's website to published reviews and presentations.

They are looking for somebody to assist with this work, including working with the original data, reviewing and analyzing academic papers, writing policy memos, and preparing presentations (power point slides, reports, graphics, etc.) The key skills required for this position are: undergraduate degree in Economics or a Masters in Public Policy/Public Affairs. J-PAL's most valuable asset is the trust others have in the accuracy of what is said--they know it is unbiased and based on strong evidence. The work of putting the costs and impacts of different social programs on a comparable basis often cannot be done simply from reading a paper--it frequently requires going back to the underlying data and interacting with the authors of the study to understand how their estimates are constructed. A strong technical understanding of economics is necessary to ensure that the findings are translated into general policy conclusions in a way that is both simple to follow but also accurate and undistorted.

This person must exhibit attention to detail and advanced writing and presentation skills for communicating policy lessons from academic papers in ways that policymakers understand. This requires clear, precise, non-technical writing, and creativity in presentation. Experience in designing effective web pages is a plus, but not required. This position is open for an immediate start, with a latest start date of early summer.

Please email a resume, statement of purpose, transcripts, and a brief writing sample (preferably on a policy issue) to Tricia Gonwa at Gonwa@mit.edu. You must apply for this position again even if you had earlier applied to J-PAL during the general hiring round but you need not resubmit transcripts or any other documents that you had previously sent. Please let them know in your email that you had applied before.
