COMTAP Data by 3-digit ISIC, 1970-1985

The COMTAP bilateral trade and production data were aggregated according to 26 three-digit ISIC industries, as shown in Table 5 of NBER WP 5910. The imports, export and production data are provided for fourteen OECD countries (see list below) and their twenty-two OECD trading partners.

The file COMIMP.ASC contains, for each of the fourteen OECD countries, the value of imports from itself and each of the twenty two partner countries (plus rest of world ) in a given year and 3 digit ISIC industry. "Own" imports are by definition equal to "own" exports, and are computed as the difference between a country’s value of production and the total value of its exports to the world. The last two columns of this file contain a country's total imports from the world (not including "own" imports) and the value of its apparent consumption (equal to production plus total imports minus total exports). The file COMEMP.ASC contains, for each of the fourteen OECD countries, the value of exports to itself and twenty two partner countries (plus rest of world) in a given year and 3 digit ISIC industry. The last two columns of this file contain a country's total exports to the world and the value of its production.

OECD Country List:

The COMIMP.ASC and COMEXP.ASC files use the following 14 country abbreviations: Australia (AUS), Canada (CAN), Finland (FIN), France (FRA), Greece (GRC), West Germany (GER), Italy (ITA), Japan (JPN), New Zealand (NZL), Spain (SPN), Sweden (SWE), United Kingdom (UKG), United States (USA), Yugoslavia (YUG).

Special Considerations:

The export figures for each country included re exports. This causes the "own" exports, imports and apparent consumption figures to be understated. For some countries, the inclusion of re exports leads to the result that exports exceed production, so that "own" exports are negative. This problem was acute for countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium, and as a result these countries were deleted as reporting countries.

ISIC 390 (Miscellaneous Manufactures) was not included in the COMTAP production database but was included in the export and import data. For consistency, the files COMIMP.ASC and COMEXP.ASC exclude ISIC 390.
