Description:

Data on non-tariff barriers is collected by the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). These data consist of indicator variables at the tariff line level for about 20 different types of NTBs. The file NTB_OECD.ASC contains "coverage ratios" at the 3-digit ISIC level, which are measures of the percent of imports covered by one or more NTB, for the OECD countries in 1983. These coverage ratios are computed for three different types of NTBs (price, quantity, and threat) as well as for overall NTBs. The coverage ratio is a weighted average of the indicator variable (equal to zero or one) for that type of NTB, using the import value corresponding to that tariff line-item as weights. Additional details are provided in Harrigan (1993).
