For identification I like to use a combination of long and short run restrictions(following Gali 1992: 'The IS-LM model and postwar US data') and I wonder if there are any RATS prcedures out there implementing such restrictions. I already checked out the procedures on estima.com. The VAR.SRC by Norman Morin does implement both long and short run but unfortunately not a combination. I also checked out the SVAR.SRC procedure from Giannini. The problem here is no explanation of the procedure in the file. So I don't know what actually is implemented. Also I could't find the paper the procedure seems to be based on. There's only a incomplete referece on the estima page saying: ...based on Giannini's monograph entitled 'Topics in Structural VAR Econometrics'. Does anybody knows the acurrate reference of this monograph, or knows what's been done in this procedure exactly? Does anybody have some experience in implementing long and short run restrictions in SVAR models to identify the structural shocks in RATS or/and has some procedures to share.. ;-) ? The answer may seem obvious until you start to really think about it). You can view the contents of the array by using WRITE, by the way. Finally, see some of the procedures on the web site for some examples of doing some fairly complex tasks with regressor lists (GARCH.SRC for example). Whenever I try to use RATS under Windows (helping a colleague/student, etc) I always find the Ready/Local mode in the Windows version VERY clumsy relative to the simple return v/s select/enter on the Mac version. Developing and debugging code under the Mac version is much easier and quicker using this two keys approach. (I guess the problem was that Estima developed this interactive interface on the Mac first and then had to find a way of doing something useful under Windows. It's not their fault that Windows doesn't allow a better alternative.) The only downside of your current Mac enter/return system I can see is *if* you have a lot of Windows users who sometimes use Mac's. I guess if you really needed to you could cater to them by introducing the local/ready mode in the Mac version, except that in 'local' mode the enter key still executed the code -- ie local/ready only affected the status of the return key, not the enter key. (Then people like me could just select a preference setting to keep it locked in local mode.) Others may have different views. There are some advantages to the DOS/Windows setup, particularly for touch-typists. For example, it's probably a bit faster if you simply want to execute each line as you type it in. Also, because you can use Ctrl+L for switching modes, touch typists can use the same key for either purpose without ever leaving the "home" position. However, given that a common approach is to type in a bunch of commands and then go back and select and then execute them, the Mac method is probably just as easy in most cases, and in general is less confusing for novice users (of course, those who skip the relevant section of "Getting Started" are often mystified by the concept of having to use the key specifcially, since most programs don't distinguish between the two).
