Let me give you a simple rationale. I teach a number of courses that lead up to the course in which I use RATS and classroom WINRATS. I believe there would be more interest in the RATS oriented class if students learned how to use RATS in the first level classes. For example, EXCEL has some limitations in many statistical procedures, therefore if I want to develop statistical procedures in an elementary statistical course, I use SPSS or SAS - RATS and EXCEL leave something to be desired. However, some EDA support would make RATS much more viable in "feeder courses." I think RATS is great product and can enthusiastically endorse if for R.A.T.S., however, some students would benefit greatly by having more elementary capabilities - more undergraduate and graduate students will graduate into being users of classroom RATS and full versions if I could stimulate their interest in earlier courses. Let me know what you think and whether you anticipate any such changes. Sometimes I have difficulty in justifying our site license because of this. Tried To Use Series Number -2. (-series n1 n2 triples are no longer > legal) > The Error Occurred At Location 0653 The comment in parens is just suggesting one possible cause for this error, and it's only likely if you are using a program originally written in an old version of RATS. Lags used to be represented using the "-series n1 n2" notation. This was superseded by the (much!) more convenient {L} notation with Version 3, and support for the old format was finally discontinued with v. 4. Thus, if you had an old program that used the old style lag notation, you would get this error in version 4. Assuming that's not the case, you probably either: a) just have a syntax problem with that instruction (putting something other than a series name or number where RATS is expecting a series), or, more likely, b) you've executed an ALLOCATE instruction more than once, thereby disrupting RATS' ability to keep track of series. Check for the: ## SR12. We recommend File-Clear Program or END xxx before ALLOCATE warning earlier in your program. If (b) is the problem, just clear the memory using File-Clear Program and you should be OK (or, if you have two ALLOCATE instructions in your program, get rid of the extra one). Hi all,

I am running RATS for Window v. = 4.31, trying to fit GARCH models to financial = data (spot and=20 futures) in which there are 2778 observations.

and when I run the = following sequence=20 of commands

NLPAR(SUBITS=3D100)
MAXIMIZE(METHOD=3DSIMPLEX,RECURSIVE,ITERS=3D50) LOGL=20 GSTART GEND
MAXIMIZE(METHOD=3DBHHH,RECURSIVE,ITERS=3D100) LOGL GSTART = GEND
the output is as follows;

How can I change = > this?=20 > Something in the formula is producing an NA for those observations (log of negative number, square root of a negative, divide by zero, etc.). As we suggest in the manual, you should set a series equal to the likelihood formula, locate one of the missing values, and work backwards to figure out where it's coming from. I would suggest doing the SET _before_ the MAXIMIZE first, just to see if the NA's occur given the initial conditions, or only after estimating parameters with MAXIMIZE. For example: set loglser gstart gend = logl(t) Print out the LOGLSER and the other series being computed by the formulas (residuals, variances, the dependent variable, etc.). If you see NA's, pick an observation and use DISPLAY instructions to examine the various pieces of your formula for that observation to see where the NA's are coming from. If everything is OK prior to doing the maximize, then just run the estimation and repeat the above process--you'll find that the final values of one or more of the parameters force NA's in some observations. Note that due to the recursive nature of GARCH models, one NA anywhere in the sample wipes out all remaining observations from that point on. You need 4.31 (or 5.0), which fixes a problem with equality constraints in L/Q programming. We can send you a copy of the 4.31 executable file--please contact me directly (support@estima.com) with your serial number and we'll take care of it.
