Ideas in Mathematics: The Grammar of Numbers
-
Find 2*(2^2) things about the number 2. Words involving the
number 2 are included, but trivial instances such as "two turtle
doves" are not going to receive much credit.
-
Using 28 matches (or toothpicks), list the numbers from 1 to 9.
You may not break the matches in pieces, or light them, or destroy
them in any way.
-
Explicate yavadunam, the method discussed in class for
squaring numbers quickly, using the formulas
(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
(a-b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2
