Text: Linear Algebra and its Applications, by David C. Lay.

This course is an introduction to the techniques of linear algebra in Euclidean space. Topics covered include matrices, determinants, systems of linear equations, vectors in n-dimensional space, complex numbers, and eigenvalues. The course is required of mathematics majors and minors, but is also suitable for students in the social sciences, natural sciences, and management.

Homework

Homework assignments will be posted on the class web site and collected weekly, generally on Fridays. If you wish to turn in any homework longer than one page, you must use a stapler or paper clip. This does not mean that you can fold the edges of the pages over. Because answers will be posted on the class web site, no late homework assignments can be accepted.

You may share ideas when working on homework assignments, but you should write up your solutions individually. Any violations of the College's policy on academic integrity will be dealt with severely. The full description of the University regulations about Academic Integrity can be found at

http://www.bc.edu/integrity

Examinations

There will be three examinations given in class, on Wednesday, October 1; Wednesday, October 29; and Monday, November 24. Please note that the November examination is scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving, and plan your travel accordingly.

The final examination for this course is scheduled for 9:00 AM on Saturday, December 13.

Grades

Homework will count for 10% of your grade. The three in-class examinations will count for 15%, 20%, and 25% of your grade, respectively. The final examination will count for the remaining 30% of your grade.
