{title:Description}

{p}
The {cmd:isco} package consists of a series of programs to recode ISCO-68
{it:(International Classification of Occupations)} codes into other
occupational scales. Use the {help isko} package to recode ISCO-88
occupational codes.
These programs are Stata versions of the SPSS recode
files by Harry B.G. Ganzeboom and Donald J. Treiman, which are available at
{browse "http://www.fss.uu.nl/soc/hg/ismf":http://www.fss.uu.nl/soc/hg/ismf}.

{p}
{cmd:iscoegp} transforms ISCO-68 codes into
a 10 category EGP scale; cf Erikson, Goldthorpe, Portocarero (1979).
The argument for the {cmd:iscoegp} commands must be a new variable name in which
the recoded occupational scale is to be placed.
Note that {cmd:iscoegp} requires the specification of variables indicating
whether or not the respondent is self-employed and whether the respondent
is a supervisor; see {cmd:options} below.

{p}
{cmd:iscoegp} recodes into the
following categories:
1 "higher controllers", 2 "lo controllers", 3 "routine nonmanual",
4 "sempl with emp", 5 "sempl without empl", 7 "manual supervisor",
8 "skilled manual",  9 "semi-unskilld manual",  10 "farm labor",
11 "selfempl farm". The recoded variable is labeled using {cmd:egp10}
as {it:lblname}; see help {help label}.

{title:Options}

{p 0 4}
{cmd:isco} specifies the variable to be recoded.
This must be a 4 digit integer containing ISCO-68 occupational codes.

{p 0 4}
{cmd:sempl} specifies a variable indicating whether or not
the respondent is self-employed. A 1 indicates self-employment, all other
values are ignored.

{p 0 4}
{cmd:supvis} specifies a variable indicating the number of employees
the respondent supervises. The values 1 and 10 are significant for
placement in certain EGP categories.
