Description -----------

^triplot6^ produces a triangular plot of the three variables leftvar, rightvar and botvar, which are plotted on the left, right and bottom sides of an equilateral triangle. Each should have values between 0 and some maximum value (default 1) and the sum of the three variables should be equal to that maximum (within rounding error). Most commonly, three fractions or proportions add to 1, or three percents add to 100.

The constraint that the three variables have a constant sum means that there are just two independent pieces of information. Hence it is possible to plot observations in two dimensions within a triangle, which is a 2-simplex.

Triangular plots appear under various names in the literature, including trilinear, triaxial, three-element maps, ternary, reference triangles, percentage triangles, mixture, barycentric. Common geological applications are to sedimentary facies or particle form: hence more specific terms such as facies and form triangles.

Note: apart from a bug fix, ^triplot6^ is a frozen version of ^triplot^ 1.2.3 28 June 2000 written for Stata 6. Users of Stata 8 are recommended to use ^triplot^ 2.0.0 or later.

Options -------

major features of plot ----------------------

^max(^#^)^ indicates that the upper limit of each variable, and the sum of all three variables, is #. Default value is 1. ^max(100)^ indicates percents.

^label(^numlist^)^ specifies a list of numeric labels to be shown on each side of the triangle, which imply dotted reference lines within the triangle.

The default is ^0(0.2)1^, or ^0(20)100^ if ^max(100)^ is specified.

As a special case, ^label(.)^ specifies no labels and no reference lines.

^vertices(^#^)^ specifies that only the vertices should be shown and not the complete bounding triangle. The argument is the fraction of each side that is shown. ^vertices(0.1)^ means that 0.1 or 10% of each side will be shown.

^y^ specifies that the Y is to be drawn that divides the triangle into regions in which each variable is greater than the other two. Some political scientists call the spokes of the Y `win lines'. Each spoke connects the midpoint of each side to the centroid of the triangle (which, by virtue of symmetry, is also the incentre, the circumcentre, the orthocentre and the Fermat point of the triangle).

^saving(^graph_filename^)^ saves the graph in a .gph file.

symbols -------

^symbol(^string^)^ indicates symbols. If ^key(^keyvar^)^ is specified, a symbol can be specified for each class present in the data.

The symbols will be used in the sort order of keyvar. If keyvar takes on values 1, 2, 3, ^sy(opd)^ means that ^o^ will indicate class 1, ^p^ class 2 and ^d^ class 3.

The default is ^sy(o)^. The possibilities are

^o^ circle ^p^ plus ^S^ square ^d^ diamond ^T^ triangle ^ .^ dot ^i^ invisible ^[_n]^ observation numbers ^[^varname^]^ values of varname

Note that this option is not an exact emulation of the ^symbol( )^ option of ^graph^. ^sy(O)^ for large circle is supported, but the result is identical to that of ^sy(o)^.

If numvar is a numeric variable with labels,

^triplot6^ ... ^sy([^numvar^]) key(^numvar^)^

means that numbers will be shown within the triangle and a key with numbers and labels will be shown outside the triangle.

Observation numbers depend on the sort order used. See ^group( )^ below for further detail.

^ptsize(^#^)^ controls point symbol size. Default 275.

^pen(^string^)^ indicates pens to be used for data symbols. Default 2 for all values. If ^key( )^ is specified, a pen can be specified for each class present in the data.

^fontr(^#^)^ and ^fontc(^#^)^ control the font used for symbols and default to 570 and 290 (which is the default of @gph@).

connections -----------

^connect( )^ specifies that successive data points are to be connected. ^connect(l)^ specifies use of a straight line and ^connect(a)^ specifies use of an arrow.

^group(^groupvar^)^ specifies a variable determining which data points may be connected. If ^group( )^ is specified, only observations with the same value of the group variable will be connected.

The order of connections is determined by the sort order of groupvar, where specified, and then by the original sort order of the data.

^ahl(^#^)^ determines the length of the arrowhead used with ^connect(a)^. Default 300.

titles ------

^ltext(^string^)^, ^rtext(^string^)^ and ^btext(^string^)^ control text on the left, right and bottom sides of the plot. They default to the variable labels (or if those do not exist, the names) of leftvar, rightvar and botvar. In each case, specifying ^" "^ blanks out the text.

^bltext(^string^)^, ^brtext(^string^)^, ^ttext(^string^)^ control text by the bottom left, bottom right and top vertices of the triangle. These options are intended as an alternative to numeric labels.

^title(^string^)^ controls the ^title^, shown centred at the bottom of the graph.

^t1title(^string^)^ controls the ^t1title^, shown centred at the top of the graph.

key ---

^key(^keyvar^)^ indicates that values are to be subdivided into classes according to keyvar. A key will be shown if and only if ^key( )^ is specified and ^key( )^ defines more than one class but not more than 12 classes.

^keycol(^#^)^ indicates the horizontal position of the top left-hand corner of the key that is shown when more than one class is shown, as controlled by the ^key( )^ option. Default is 24000. Less than 24000 means nearer the left than default.

^keyrow(^#^)^ indicates the vertical position of the top left-hand corner of the key that is shown when more than one class is shown, as controlled by the ^key( )^ option. Default is 4000. Less than 4000 means nearer the top than default.

^keytext(^keytextvar^)^ allows the simultaneous use of a numeric order and string values in the key.

In particular, if numvar is a numeric variable and strvar is a string variable,

^triplot6^ ... ^sy([^numvar^]) key(^numvar^) keytext(^strvar^)^

or

^triplot6^ ... ^sy(^string^) key(^numvar^) keytext(^strvar^)^

instructs ^triplot6^ to use in the key both the text or symbols representing numvar and string values from strvar. Key elements will be in the order defined by numvar.

Suppose we have data on percent votes for three parties in several elections for several areas. It is desired to connect the successive votes for each area. The command will resemble

If the data are originally in wide form with variables such as ^Dem60^, ^Rep60^, ^Other60^, ^Dem64^, ^Rep64^, ^Other64^, etc., then it will be necessary to ^reshape^ them:

It can make sense to use the same variable as ^key( )^ and ^group( )^ variable.
