Information on WebCT

 

What is WebCT?

BC uses WebCT as a prime e-learning system to complement classroom instruction. 

 

WebCT provides instructors with secure web space where they can maintain course related files and documents, as well as discussion lists and assignments. 

 

BC currently uses WebCT only to enhance classroom instruction; true e-learning courses do not yet exist as part of the curricula.

 

Many, but not all instructors use WebCT to enhance their classrooms. You can access WebCT in one of two ways:

  1. URL login (http://webct.bc.edu:8900) - login requires BC ID as username and PIN as password.
  2. Agora drop-down menu option (https://agora.bc.edu/course/enter.webct) – login (to Agora) requires BC ID as username and PIN as password. You will not need a special login for WebCT once you have logged onto Agora.

WebCT FAQs for Students

 

Q: How do I login to WebCT?

A: Go to http://webct.bc.edu:8900 (:8900 must be present)

     enter BC ID as username and BC PIN as password


OR


If already in Agora

From the drop-down menu, choose WebCT (no WebCT login screen with this option)

Q:  I’m trying to login to WebCT, but the URL isn’t working.

 

A:  1. Please make sure that you have typed the address correctly - many errors occur due to basic typographical errors.

 

2. You need the :8900 at the end of the address.  Especially from off-campus through a third-party ISP, you will not be able to access http://webct.bc.edu without the :8900.

 

Q:  I can enter my WebCT course, but I can’t get anything to work (e.g. broken icons, garbage on screen).

 

A:  Please check that you have the proper browsers to support WebCT and its functions.  Basically, if your browser complies with Agora standards, it should work with WebCT.

Q:  My professor says I have a WebCT course, but it's not on the myWebCT list.  What is wrong?

 

A:  Please scroll down on your myWebCT page to ensure that the course is not listed anywhere. If it is not listed there, when did you register for the course?  Because BC does not update WebCT courses in real time, any WebCT-linked course added today will become available for you tomorrow after 5:00 a.m.

 

Also note that not all instructors at Boston College are using WebCT in their teaching, or some may have not yet designated their course sites for population with actual student data.

 

Q:  I’m in WebCT, but I can’t access the articles my professor wants me to read.

 

A:  You may not have the proper plug-ins to read the material.  Please go to this URL to check that your computer has the proper plug-ins to function in WebCT.

Q:  I want to use the WebCT chat to talk to my professor during his/her office hours, but it won’t open up for me.

 

A:  You need to configure your browser properly to access this function (Java needs to be enabled).  Please go to this URL and check that your browser is set properly.
